cia has been told by the fbi there's no indication petraeus misused classified material, but the investigation is open ended. this as new details emerge thursday about frederick humphreys ii, the fbi agent that trgered the investigation that led to the resignation. he is a 16 year veteran, played a major role in foilg the plot to blow up lax in 1999. military officials say he is currently fbi liaison officer for special operations command in tampa. humphreys got to know jill kelley in tampa and she turned to him when she and general john allen received anonymous e-mails last spring they found alarming. thursday, humphreys helped explain that shirtless picture he sent kelley telling them it was a joke. he posed with target dummies after s.w.a.t. practice. he told an old friend about the petraeus investigation. reichearth alerted eric cantor, almost two weeks before the president was officially notified. >> information that was sent to me sounded as if there was potential for a national security vulnerability. >> reporter: attorney jenngene l general eric holder was asked why the p

david petraeus all started with a seemingly unrelated complaint to the fbi. officials say it was triggered by e-mails from petraeus' biographer, paula broadwell, to another woman not related to petraeus who felt she was being harassed and complained to the fbi. officials say in recent weeks the fbi traced the e-mails to broadwell and only stumbled on the relationship with tpetraeus as a result. >> my first reaction was disbelief. >> reporter: now petraeus' former spokesperson steven boylan is speaking out. he worked with the the the from 2005 to 2008 including in iraq. the two have remained close and spoke by phone on saturday. >> he said he had an excellent job, an exceptional family. he had had a great relationship he thought with the white house and, in his words, he screwed up. and he knows it. >> reporter: officials in washington are also still processing the stunning turn of events which started on tuesday. that's when the justice department notified the head of national intelligence about broadwell's e-mails. then clapper notified the white house wednesday. thursday mornin

reports kelley tried this summer to get the fbi to drop the investigation that began with kelley's complaint of harassing e-mails traced back to broadwell. people familiar with the case tell the journal that she became worried about personal information being provided to investigators. meanwhile, the washington post quotes senior law enforcement officials as saying the search conducted at broadwell's home monday night marks a renewed focus on learning just how broadwell gained access to classified files. jill kelley, who has given some impression that she has some kind of state department status that officials say she does not have, called police last weekend after news crews, including nbc, staked out her home and at one point invoked diplomatic-type privileges. >> i am an honorary consul-general so i have inviolability so they should not be able to cross my property. i don't know if you want to get diplomatic protection involved as well. >> just who is jill kelley. her name has come up in connection with two of the nation's top commanders. more now on her story from nbc's kristen

. we're learning more about what sparked the fbi investigation that ultimately led general david petraeus to resign his post as cia director. officials say he was never under investigation. marla tellez joins us in our studio with what they have learned overnight. >> reporter: the fbi's investigation began with a woman who worked for the state department and overnight she has been identified as jill kelly. kelly, who was a personal close friend of general david petraeus, said she was receiving anonymous, harassing e-mails from someone. well, that someone turned out to be paula broadwell, petraeus' mistress. the nature of those e-mails has not been disclosed. it was during this investigation that fbi agents discovered e-mails between broadwell and petraeus they say were indicative of an extramarital affair, which led to general petraeus' resignation on friday. senator dianne feinstein, who heads up the senate select committee on intelligence says the news hit her like a lightning bolt. >> broadwell sent these threatening e-mails to her and she was frightened and she went to the fb

morning. >> reporter: jon, good morning. actually it's the same woman who launched the initial fbi investigation that led to the resignation of general david petraeus. she is jill kelly. apparently she has exchanged 20,000 to 30,000 e-mails, at least that many pages of e-mails with general john allen. john allen replaced general petraeus in afghanistan. now, these e-mails have been discovered and are under investigation by the inspector general at the pentagon. what was their relationship? we do not know. that question was not answered by senior defense officials. but they do say that allen denies any inappropriateness, any wrongdoing. interestingly he was already in town for a confirmation hearing that was previously scheduled for thursday. they were moving him from afghanistan to europe to oversee our forces there. that requires senate confirmation. he was here preparing for that. now according to the defense secretary who made the initial announcement early this morning about this new investigation, that confirmation is on hold. he keeps his job until they have some evidence tha

there. speaking of classified information, turns out fbi investigators apparently found some at paula broadwell's home when she consented to a search of her north carolina home. classified documents. nbc says they're not highly classified. the president says nothing to negatively impact national security. however, how she got them is a question. prosecutors may have to decide whether or not to charge her, depending on how they were accessed. and where all those documents are now. we believe they are all in the hands of government officials who were involved with that search. and then finally this morning, we heard from defense secretary leon panetta, who says he doesn't believe there's anyone else involved in this situation with general petraeus, general john allen, who now says he'll cooperate with the investigation, jill kelle why, paula broad well, and fred humphries, the fbi agent who initially investigated the case and then was dismissed because of pictures he sent to jill kelley. >> it just gets keeper and deeper. yesterday things got a little heated on capitol hill. the preside

with what the briefings could entail. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. today the fbi, cia expected to give key members briefing of what happened here and when. and the questions they want answered. mane time, we are awaiting a written statement that was supposed to come yesterday but did not from general allen about the allegations. e-mails and other documents, thousands of pages, tens of thousands, between him and jill kelley. it is important to note senior defense officials say they are not explicit, there's nothing suggestive of an inappropriate relationship that they have seen thus far but that some of the communications may have been unprofessional or even player tashous. allen denied any wrongdoing as of this morning, his boss, defense secretary panetta, says don't lead to conclusions here that we postponed his confirmation hearing for thursday. it was a prudent thing to do, panetta says, until all of the facts on this come out. meantime, here in washington, we are watching a home here where paula broadwell is believed to be. she was just seen a short time ago coming
